Many people want to be advocates and allies but aren't sure where to begin. While this question often comes from a place of good intentions, it can be overwhelming for Black and BIPOC individuals when allies repeatedly ask them how to start. As a true ally, the first step is to take the initiative to educate yourself. This means actively seeking to understand both the current issues and the historical injustices that have shaped them. Repeatedly explaining these topics can be emotionally exhausting, and, in some cases, even traumatic. Being an ally means recognizing the emotional labor involved and committing to your own learning.
